The media informed us last month that our summer wasn’t over yet. I think if I asked for a show of hands on whether that was old news and it’s gone now for this year, most (there’s always one who wants to be different) would agree. So as we head into autumn, let’s look forward to another meetup with two fantastic talks and more PowerShell and DevOps’y goodness.

Agenda

We have two speakers this month, one remote and one at the venue (ie. me):

  • 6.00pm - Arrive, Pizza, Mingle

  • 6.20pm - Introduction

  • 6.30pm - PowerShell Core - The Present and Future of PowerShell by Rob Pleau [t|w];
    Windows PowerShell has been around for over 10 years. In that time it has grown and gained significant adoption in the Windows world. In the past year PowerShell Core released, as an open source, cross platform, next generation version of PowerShell. There are some catches however as it’s not quite the same as Windows PowerShell… Though the differences are shrinking more and more each release. We’ll take a look at installing and using it on both Windows and Linux! We’ll talk about what’s new in PowerShell Core, and what makes it different from Windows PowerShell. See how you can use the two together for things like modules that aren’t quite ready for PowerShell Core yet. Last we’ll talk a bit about the future of both PowerShell Core and Windows PowerShell.

  • 7.30pm - Break

  • 7.45pm - Git Fundamentals - Opening up a world of community and collaboration by Paul Broadwith [t|w];
    The days of point and click are going, going … gone. We are moving to a world of Infrastructure as Code, DevOps, CI / CD and automation. The backbone for much of this shift is a simple version control system called Git. In this talk I’ll take you through what Git is, how you use it and, most importantly, why you need understand Git to help further your career.

  • 8.45pm - Thank You’s

Rob is also a chapter author in The PowerShell Conference Book. I’d encourage everybody to go buy this book as it’s for a fantastic cause. All profits go to The DevOps Collective for the 2019 OnRamp program scholarships!

Location

You can find the Incremental Group on the 5th floor of the Garment Factory, 10 Montrose Street, Glasgow, G1 1RE. NOTE: Google Maps is showing Incremental Group as near the Trongate which is incorrect. Search for the address and not Incremental Group.

Montrose street is just off of George Square and equi-distant of Queen Street and High Street train stations with a 5 minute walk. Glasgow Central and Argyle Street are around a 10 minute walk. When you get there press the buzzer on the small door to the left of the main doors.

Thanks to Incremental Group for hosting us once again. They really have been fantastic!

Sponsors

I want to say a big thank you to both of our sponsors; MBN Solutions[t|w] for continuing to support the group with pizza and drinks, and Incremental Group[t|w] for providing us with the fantastic venue. Without support from sponsors, groups such as ours wouldn’t exist.

Mailing List

If you’re not already a member of the mailing list, please subscribe to the group update emails. This allows us to keep you up to date on news with the group including meetings once our subscription comes to an end.

The group needs YOU!

The group is always in need of speakers so if you have a topic you’d like to talk about, whether that be a problem you have come across that you solved with PowerShell or a DevOps project you are working on that you’d like to share then it’s simple. You can do a 5, 10, 15, 30 minute or full hour talk. If you’ve been to the face to face meetups you’ll know that we’re a friendly crowd. So contact us.

October Super Meetup

Next months meetup is a little different and I want to make sure you all know about it. The Glasgow Azure, SQL Glasgow and our group are planning a joint SUPER meetup for 24 October. We are looking for speakers to give a 10 minute talk and you will get help with this from the group leaders. So if you ever fancied speaking but were too afraid to ask more, now is your time to start with a simple 10 minute talk and some help from us. And if you want to attend, get your tickets now!

Make sure you signup for next months super meetup and I will hopefully see you Wednesday!
